Family Events ~ May 23 - May 30

I realize it's been some time since I've posted. Frankly, I just don't know how some people manage to blog daily - AND have such interesting and informative posts. But, I'm going to try and get back on the wagon. I'll be in Ontario for the OGS Conference at the end of the week, so I should certainly have plenty of good topics available!

I'm going to "cheat" a little bit here and include a few events from Friday rather than starting with Sunday. Once again putting these events together showed me something I hadn't realized. My great-grandfather was born on HIS father's 50th birthday. I hadn't ever noticed that the dates were the same.

May 23 ~ in 1823 John Ulrick SAURER was born in Canton Berne, Switzerland. In 1873, his son, John Frederick SAURER was born near Apple Creek, Ohio. [Picture - John F Saurer]

May 24 ~ in 1899 John Ulrick Saurer died in Apple Creek, Ohio.

May 27 ~ in 1867 my second great granduncle, John Hannington Auflick, was born in Pomeroy, Ohio.

May 28 ~ in 1808 Margaret Souter, my 3rd great grandaunt, was christened in Fife, Scotland. Also on this day in 1835, my 3rd great grandmother Louisa was born in Germany. I have yet to find her maiden name, but she married and arrived in this country as Louisa EICKELBERG. [Picture - Louisa Eickelberg, about 1918/20]

May 30 ~ William August Henry NISSEN, who I believe was my great-grandma Nelle EICKELBERG'S first husband, died in 1962 in San Diego, California.

As I read through all the wonderful Mother's Day blog tributes today, it makes me even more grateful that today I can go over and visit with my Mom. We can just sit and talk or watch a baseball game on TV ~ but we can do it together.

Not only can I visit with her, but I'd better make sure to fit it in while she and Dad are still in town! You know how people always say that when they retire they are going to travel? Well, my parents really actually do travel. I one threaten to start a website - www.whereintheworldaremomanddad.com just to keep track of them.

I know that I am who I am today because of my Mom. She always encouraged us to do what interested us and pursue our dreams. I can't imaging a more loving or supportive way to grow up.

So, Happy Mother's Day Mom from your 1st - and FAVORITE child!!

More Mother's Day

It's so hard to even choose what pictures to use! Here are some pictures of my Mom when she was in jr high, high school and college.

This first picture is out front of the house in Ohio were my Mom lived during her junior high and high school years. [This is the house I remember growing up going to visit my grandparents.]




On to High School - here is a newspaper clipping when my Mom was on the homecoming court. Somewhere I have a picture that my Grandpa took of this same event. I can't lay my hands on the picture at the moment, but I remember his caption, "The Queen's attendant is OUR Queen." [Mom is in the back, middle]

Here is a picture of Mom when she would go to Indiana Dunes to work for the summer during her college years.




Finally (for today)...and what we she doing during college ~ dating my Dad! I was going to try to crop this picture to focus in on Mom and Dad more, but I liked the whole look of the picture - on the steps and the white columns so I left it exactly as it was.

Wordless Wednesday ~ Mom Naturally

As I said yesterday, I am celebrating Mother's Day all week. So, for "Wordless" Wednesday (yeah, yeah...I know, not so wordless, am I?!) here are some more snap shots of my mom taken by her father Jack H QUICK. Fortunately he put captions and dates on all his pictures!

I'm Celebrating Mother's Day All Week!

In honor of Mother's Day this Sunday, I've updated my banner with just pictures of my mother! I should have put this up earlier, but I wanted it to be perfect - just the right pictures and evenly spread out by age etc etc. Well, tonight I realized that if I waited until I got it JUST RIGHT I probably wouldn't have it done even by Father's Day. So, here it is!

I am very fortunate to have many, many pictures of my Mom as a young child. Each year on her birthday, her Grandma would take her to a studio in Denver to have a portrait made. I always find it funny when I look at them that they generally colored her eyes brown. My mother has very dark blue eyes, as do I. But when they were hand coloring these, I supposed that all they saw was "dark" and that ended up to be brown.


Besides these beautiful formal portraits, my Mom's father loved to take snapshots. Here is one that I especially love. The "attitude" just comes right off the page! Something else that has been handed down, along with the blue eyes :-)

An Award Awaited Me Tonight

When I got home tonight, dreading all the things I had to do, I found that Lori over at Family Tree May Contain Nuts had presented me the "One Lovely Blog Award"! That certainly made my evening better and coming from someone who has such a beautiful blog herself, it was even more fun.

The instructions are quite simple - just to nominate 7 other blogs. Well, it SOUNDS simple, but looking over all the creativity we have out there, wow, how to pick only 7!

One thing this made me realize is that I need to actually visit others blogs more and not just read them through a reader. As I was jumping over to blogs to make comments to let people know about their award I realized, once again, just HOW lovely so many blogs are. It's fun to see everyone's personalities shine through on their blogs.
