Tombstone Tuesday ~ More from Watt Cemetery

[William Sisler born Jan 31, 1832 died June 19, 1888]

This is not one of my relatives, it's another stone in Watt Cemetery which I am (slowly) mapping. Since my first post about the cemetery, I've learned just a little bit more. One day when I was there, a lady walking her dogs stopped to talk to me. She asked if I was a relative of the people buried there. I told her no, that I was just taking pictures. She told me that until recently the family used to come out every year to clean up the cemetery. [The cemetery is now in a subdivision and this lady lives next to it.] She said they used to have a lot of people there working - almost like a reunion! She didn't know why they stopped coming out, but they haven't been there for several years.

If we would get some nicer weather, I'd like to go back and get the rest of the pictures.

I have chosen this picture of my grandmother when she was a nursing student in Cleveland, Ohio. The year would have been 1931/32. My Grandma, Lela SAURER, is in the middle. Unfortunately I have no idea who her friends are.

Imagine walking around a hospital ward all day in those shoes! They certainly don't look comfortable to me.

Random Relative of the Week

[In truly "random" fashion I am posting this on Monday instead of Sunday...but as the postcard itself says, better late than never!]


I believe this rather intense looking child could possibly be Edna GRABER born 18 Jul 1891 in Apple Creek, Ohio and died 27 Sept 1965.

The picture is on the front of a postcard that Edna sent to her sister, my great-grandmother, Ella GRABER SAURER.

The postcard is postmarked Apr 22 1913 and reads as follows:

"Dear Sister: Well how are you making it by this time? Did you mind what I told you about getting up before your birthday. I came pretty near forgetting about it until now. but they always say better late than never. How is the little girl have you named her yet. I suppose you will not know this picture it's not very good but I thought I would send it any way Don't forget to ansr. I Remain Your Sister, Edna"

Edna would have been married by this time and living in Rittman, Ohio. I don't believe that the picture would be of one of her children however, as the picture seems too old.

Oh, and the unnamed "little girl" would be my grandmother, Lela Mable SAURER, born March 21, 1913.

[Sorry I've been MIA the last week ~ just a little under the weather but getting back in the swing of things!]

This marker is in Apple Creek Cemetery in Apple Creek, Ohio. David and Lela are my grandparents.

My Grandpa's middle name was Washington because he was born on Feb 22 - George Washington's birthday.

Grandma is Lela Mable SAURER and she once told me that her nickname in school was "Pickles" as a play on Saurer/sour I guess.
